Animal Information, Health Risks
Hantaviruses are negative sense RNA viruses in the Bunyaviridae family. Humans may be infected with hantaviruses through urine, saliva or contact with rodent waste products.
Histoplasmosis (also known as "Cave disease," "Darling's disease," "Ohio valley disease," "Reticuloendotheliosis," "Spelunker’s Lung" and Caver's disease) A disease caused by the airborne fungus Histoplasma capsulatum. Histoplasmosis is a disease caused by a fungus that naturally occurs in the soil and grows in bird and bat droppings. Most individuals who acquire histoplasmosis have no symptoms. Symptoms that do occur will vary, depending on the form of the disease. Acute histoplasmosis is characterized by respiratory symptoms, general malaise, fever, chest pains, and a dry non-productive cough. The chronic form of histoplasmosis infection resembles chronic pulmonary tuberculosis and progresses over months or years.
Baylisascaris procyonis {Raccoon Roundwoems} is a roundworm nematode, found ubiquitously in raccoons, its larvae migrating in the intermediate hosts causing visceral larva migrans (VLM). Baylisascariasis as the zoonotic infection of humans is rare, though extremely dangerous due to the ability of the parasite's larvae to migrate into brain tissue and cause damage. Concern for human infection has been increasing over the years due to urbanization of rural areas resulting in the increase in proximity and human interaction with raccoons.
Rabies (pronounced /'reɪbiːz/. From Latin: rabies, "madness") is a viral disease that causes acute encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) in warm-blooded animals. The disease is zoonotic, meaning it can be transmitted from one
species to another, such as from dogs to humans, commonly by a bite from an
infected animal.
Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii. The parasite will infect most genera of warm-blooded animals, including humans, but the primary host is the (cat) family.Birds and Bats: The diseases associated with fungi and bacteria present in bird and bat droppings include cryptococcosis, histoplasmosis, and psittacosis.

Cryptococcosis Cryptococcosis is a disease caused by a fungus that naturally occurs in the soil and grows in bird and bat droppings. Cryptococcosis symptoms include meningitis, severe headache, mental disturbances, fever, blurred vision, and cough. This disease is most common in individuals with compromised immune systems.
Psittacosis: Psittacosis is a disease caused by a bacteria that is found in bird droppings and other secretions (often carried by pet birds). Symptoms of psittacosis infection may include a low-grade fever that often becomes worse as the disease progresses, including anorexia, sore throat, light sensitivity, and a severe headache.
Cryptococcosis, histoplasmosis, and psittacosis infections can affect anyone. Yet the most at risk are occur with individuals who are young, elderly, or immune-compromised.
